Carousel

Show dates: April 1991

Synopsis:

Situated on the New England coastline, Carousel tells the story of a roguish carnival man Billy Bigelow and mill worker Julie Jordan – loners who meet and fall in love. Their marriage ends up costing both their jobs, and things continue to go downhill.

Billy’s desperation causes him to be violent against those he loves most and drives him to commit crimes in order to provide for his family. When Billy gets mixed up with con-man Jigger Craigin, he ends up getting caught in the midst of an armed robbery and tragically takes his own life.

In the way only musicals can, Billy returns to earth for one day, fifteen years later, where he encounters the daughter he never knew. Louise is a lonely, friendless teenager - her father's reputation having haunted her throughout her young life. But somehow Billy is able to instil in both the child and her mother a sense of hope which, until then, had been lost.

A classic American musical, spanning heaven and earth, it’s a tale of human frailty, resilience, and the power of forgiveness.
